e-mail from Lizanne in France re smells

First and maybe last note re: smells.
Flight from Newark to Paris, was delayed due to another plane's emergency landing. This only increased the awareness of a few people who don't like soap and water as much as I do. But not bad all things considered.

First night here, Raclette, a certain style of eating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raclette This cheese stinks to high heaven. STill remember when Carolyn, Janice and I were in Paris. Ate at this style restaurant, don't know how we got over the smell. Dirty socks is what Emily called it. I will never forget it again.

Walked 1k to local grocery. A mini walmart actually, because they have many things one wouldn't expect at a grocery store. i.e. horse manure and dictionaries.

Anyway, the walk is quite lovely. An established path under the trees, a few feet from the road. Smells remind me of North Carolina, because that is the most permanent memory of pine trees that I have. Very clean smelling and refreshing. Being in French countryside not that much different from our own. Food tastes better because it's different. Same thing I thought in the Napa Valley of California. Everyone would benefit from getting outside their norm now and again. Tata for now (ttfn) Lizanne

Betsy's p.s. Loved the note..hope it's not the last :)

  1. Well, you actually got it right, but wiki doesn't. Raclette is first and foremost a style of eating, a meal and then also a cheese (and a machine called raclette grill as the insider's guide to raclette tells us)!

It's really funny, but once raclette cheese has melted in the little pans... it doesn't stink anymore! Weird!

And Happy Swiss National Day (August 1), as raclette is the national Swiss dish!
